How panty sizing works
Panty sizes are based on your body measurements rather than clothing labels. Compare your waist and hip measurements to the chart — if they point to different sizes, go with the larger of the two, since the hips drive the fit for most styles and too-small elastic digs in.
| Size | Waist (inches) | Hips (inches) | US dress size |
|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 24–25 | 34–35 | 0–2 |
| S | 26–27 | 36–37 | 4–6 |
| M | 28–29 | 38–39 | 8–10 |
| L | 30–32 | 40–42 | 12–14 |
| XL | 33–35 | 43–45 | 16 |
| 2XL | 36–38 | 46–48 | 18 |
| 3XL | 39–41 | 49–51 | 20 |
Keep in mind that different cuts fit the same size differently — a thong has far less fabric across the hip than a brief, so it can feel tighter even in the correct size.

Measuring & fit tips
- Measure over bare skin or thin underwear, standing relaxed with the tape level all the way round.
- Let your hips decide. For most styles the hip measurement matters more than the waist — when in doubt, size to your hips.
- Between sizes? Size up. Slightly roomier elastic stays put comfortably; too-small underwear rolls, digs and shows lines.
- Match the cut to the outfit. Seamless or laser-cut styles disappear under fitted clothes; cotton briefs are the everyday comfort pick.
- Expect new elastic to be snug. A firm new fit is normal — it relaxes with wear. Painful pinching is not; that's a size issue.
Frequently asked questions
Is panty size the same as dress size?
Not exactly, but they're closely linked — that's why the chart above shows US dress-size equivalents. Because brands cut differently, your body measurements are a more reliable guide than the size you wear in dresses.
Should I size up or down if I'm between panty sizes?
Size up. Underwear that's too small digs in and rolls; slightly roomier elastic still stays put and is far more comfortable. The exception is shapewear, which is designed to fit snugly.
Do thongs and briefs use the same sizing?
The size label is the same, but the fit isn't. Thongs and g-strings have less fabric across the hip so they can feel tighter in your usual size; boyshorts and briefs offer more coverage. If a style feels off, try a different cut before a different size.
How often should I re-measure for panty size?
Check once or twice a year, or after a noticeable weight change. Elastic stretches over time, so a size that once fit perfectly can start slipping — re-measuring keeps the fit right.
